Learning Management System (LMS)
Mitchell Community College uses an online platform called a Learning Management System (LMS) to deliver course materials, assignments, and grades. The purpose of an LMS is to make it simple to view the information relevant to your courses.
Mitchell Community College is currently transitioning to a new LMS called Canvas, expected to be completed by the end of 2027. During this transition, some courses may still use our current LMS, called OpenLMS (also known as Moodle). This means you might see your courses in either Canvas or OpenLMS/Moodle until the transition to Canvas is fully completed. No matter which system your course uses, you will always have a dedicated online space for your class.
For all courses, instructors must include their contact information, syllabus, and course schedule in the LMS. Instructors must also use the gradebook for recording grades. Instructors of seated classes may use their LMS course site to enhance teaching and learning in the classroom setting.
For blended, hybrid, and Hybrid-Flexible (HyFlex) courses, teaching and learning occur both in person and online. In blended courses, the majority of instruction takes place in person, with some online components. In hybrid courses, the majority of instruction takes place online, with some required in-person meetings. In HyFlex courses, students have the flexibility to choose how they participate in each class session: either in person or online (live through tools such as Microsoft Teams, recorded lessons, or both). Regardless of course format, students are expected to check course materials and updates in the LMS regularly.
Students taking online courses do not attend in-person lessons or lectures. However, some online courses may require students to take a required face‐to‐face orientation, pre/post-testing, or in-person testing during the course. Additionally, instructors might use other educational software or web‐based technology. Students can check the "Additional Information” section of their courses in Self-Service or ask their academic advisor if their online course has any of these requirements.
You can use your course schedule to identify which type of course you are taking. The type of course is identified by the third letter of the course section.

All students must complete an Enrollment Verification Activity (EVA) in the LMS. The EVA is in the “First Assignment” (Enrollment Verification Activity) section of the course. For courses with an online component, the EVA must be completed on or before the course census date to maintain your enrollment.
