General Occupational Technology A.A.S. Degree [A55280] and Diploma Program [D55280]

Program Information

The General Occupational Technology curriculum provides individuals with an opportunity to upgrade skills and to earn an associate degree, diploma, and/or certificate by taking courses suited for individual occupational interests and/or needs.

The curriculum content will be customized for students according to occupational interests and needs. A program of study for each student will be selected from any non-developmental level courses offered by the College.

Graduates will become more effective workers, better qualified for advancements within their field of employment, and become qualified for a wide range of entry-level employment opportunities. Students may be awarded a non-degree credential (i.e., certificate, diploma) after completing a specific portion of the Associate degree program.

Program Learning Outcomes

  • Apply critical thinking skills.

  • Attain the necessary licensures and qualifications.

  • Apply relevant mathematical concepts.

  • Communicate appropriately with colleagues, supervisors, and clients.

Technical Requirements

The General Occupation Technology program technical standards have been developed to inform students of the nonacademic essential functions of the program and profession. Examples are not all-inclusive.

Standard   Essential Function Examples

Technical Proficiency

  • Students are often expected to learn to use various tools, equipment, and technologies relevant to their chosen field.
  • If the program prepares students for careers in electrical systems technology, they may need to learn how to diagnose and repair electrical systems.
Safety Protocols
  • Understanding and implementing safety protocols and practices is essential in many occupations.
  • In a welding program, students may learn how to operate welding equipment safely and follow proper safety procedures.
Problem-Solving
  • Developing problem-solving skills is crucial. Students might be required to analyze and troubleshoot issues in their field.
  • In a computer networking program, students may learn to identify and resolve network connectivity problems.

Communication Skills

  • Effective communication is essential in many occupations. Students may be taught to communicate clearly and professionally with colleagues, supervisors, and clients.
  • Fields like customer service, where students may need to handle customer inquiries or complaints.

Data Analysis and Reporting

  • In data analysis or quality control fields, students may learn how to collect and analyze data and prepare reports.
  • In a program related to quality assurance, students may learn how to inspect products and report on their findings.
Digital Literacy
  • In today's technologically driven world, digital literacy is often critical.
  • Students may need to use software tools for data analysis, project management, or document

Maintenance and Repair

  • In many technical fields, learning how to maintain, service, and repair equipment or systems is essential.
  • Learning how to service HVAC systems, repair industrial machinery, or maintain electrical systems.

Hands-on Experience

  • Practical experience and hands-on training are often emphasized.
  • Students may work on real-world projects or in lab settings to gain practical skills and experience.

Interpersonal Skills

  • Developing interpersonal skills is important, especially if the program prepares students for roles that involve working with others.
  • In healthcare, for example, students may need to learn how to interact with patients and provide care in a compassionate manner.
Adaptability
  • The ability to adapt to new technologies and techniques within their chosen field is also crucial.
  • Many industries are constantly evolving, and professionals need to stay up to date with the latest developments.
